The WNBA All-Star team has been finalized and surprisingly I am pretty happy with the results. The All-Stars will take on the USA Women’s National Team as they prepare for the 2024 Olympics. Team USA is stacked but the All-Stars will likely present a greater challenge than any team they will face in Paris. Players were selected through votes by players, coaches, fans, and media.
The WNBA fan vote finished with Caitlin Clark topping the list with 700,735 votes and her Indiana Fever teammate Aliyah Boston in 2nd with 618,680. The rest of the top 5 fan vote receivers were A’ja Wilson (607,300), Breanna Stewart (424,135), and Angel Reese (381,518). It’s an incredible feat the popularity that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese how many active fans these two rookies have helped create. Reese has been hyper-criticized since entering the league and has done nothing but prove all of the haters wrong. Look at how much this All-Star selection means to her.
The fact that A’ja Wilson received 607,300 votes which was only good enough for 3rd place is exciting for the WNBA. The comparison of the number of votes it took her to win last year and the amount she got for her 3rd place finish is a testament to the direction the league is heading in.
The standout players for the All-Stars are Arike Ogunbowale, Jonquel Jones, and Nneka Ogwumike. Arike won MVP of the All-Star game back in 2021 when the All-Stars played Team USA before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She will be playing in the all-star game for the 4th time in her 6 year career. Jonquel Jones, who earned her 5th All-Star nod and at her best, there is no denying that she plays like an MVP candidate. Lastly, Nneka Ogwumike will make her 9th All-Star appearance, the highest on the team. A special shout-out is also necessary for Kayla McBride. She is making her first All-Star game appearance since 2019. She is one of the main reasons why the Lynx have one of the 3 best records in the league and deserves this selection.
Expect a great game as this format is much more competitive than having a standard all-star game. The last game finished with a 93-85 victory in favor of the All-Stars. The game will take place in Phoenix on July 20th.
