Jewell Loyd is making her first appearance as the WNBA Universe Player of the Day. In a 97-76 win against the Dallas Wings, she had 30 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. She shot only 42.9% from the field as her efficiency problems continued. Loyd found the majority of her success at the free throw line, going a staggering 16/17. This game is a great example of the elite-level scorer that she is. Even during a poor shooting season for her standards, Loyd always finds a way to impact the game on the offensive end.
She continued her reign of terror on the Dallas Wings. Last season Loyd notched 30 points, 39 points, and 31 points in her 3 matchups against them. It’s unclear if it’s the fast-paced nature of the Wings or wanting to show out against fellow Notre Dame alumni, Arike Ogunbowale. Regardless of the reason, she almost always torches them.
Before the Indiana Fever game, where she had 34 points and made 6 three-pointers, she failed to eclipse the 20-point mark in 4 consecutive games. Loyd is starting to heat back up, scoring 30 points or more in back-to-back games. In typical fashion she finds herself as a top-five scorer in the league, averaging 19.9 points per game.
The Seattle Storm have also won three games in a row, seemingly hitting their stride. The super team of Loyd, Diggins-Smith, and Ogwumike is meshing well and they are a team that will give the top teams a lot of trouble. The Seattle Storm will take on the Dallas Wings again on July 1st. If history tells us anything, you can expect a big night from Jewell Loyd.
