Player of the Day 06/30/24: Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark shined brightly in an upset victory over the Phoenix Mercury. She just missed out on a triple-double, ending with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists. Clark was one rebound shy of having the first rookie triple-double in the history of the WNBA. While known by many for her deep three-point shooting and high-scoring games, her passing has been the most impressive part of her game.

Outside of Chelsea Gray, there is no other player that sees the floor like she does. She made up for her struggles from the field by putting up the second-highest assist total of her rookie season. After going down by 11 points in the first half, Clark spearheaded a monster 3rd quarter comeback. She had an astounding 6 assists in the 3rd quarter alone.

With this most recent performance, Clark moves to 3rd on the assists per game leaderboard. She is also first in three-pointers made with 56 and while leading the league in three-pointers made is an amazing achievement, her passing is what separates her. In just 20 games she has already broken the Indiana Fever record for assists in a season with 129. She is so good with the ball in transition and going downhill. Clark has done an excellent job in rewarding Boston and Fagbenle for running the floor. Check out all of her assists below.

This win against the Phoenix Mercury has been Clark’s best team moment in her WNBA career. The young Fever team didn’t hang their heads after going down by double digits in the first half. Led by Caitlin’s Clark unselfish play, the Fever has earned a win against a team with three Olympians. Clark is a generational talent. I have her as the current front-runner for Rookie of the Year with Angel Reese as a close second. Clark will be in action again on July 2nd when the Fever play the Las Vegas Aces.
