Player of the Day 07/04/24: Alyssa Thomas

Alyssa Thomas led the way for the Connecticut Sun in a 78-73 win against the Minnesota Lynx. The Sun defense was in full effect and only gave up 14 points in the 4th quarter. Thomas played all 40 minutes and sparked the 2nd half comeback with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. She finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists, living up to her nickname, the Engine.

This was her second time this season having 14 assists. That was also the 13th triple-double of her career including the playoffs (10 in the regular season). That’s over 3 times more than the next closest player and Alyssa Thomas is now the only player this WNBA season with multiple triple-doubles.

Thomas, the MVP candidate, is one of the most unique players in the league. She’s a member of Team USA and will be taking part in the All-Star game on July 20th. AT is averaging 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 7.9 assists on the season. She’s tied with her career high in assists and also among the league leaders in multiple categories, averaging the most assists (7.9) and the 5th most rebounds (9.6).

This was a much-needed win for the Sun after only winning 2 out of their last 5 games. They move to 16-4 on the season and will be back in action on July 7th against Alisha Gray’s struggling Atlanta Dream. In their last matchup, Alyssa Thomas had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists.

In other WNBA news, Napheesa Collier exited the game in the 3rd quarter against the Sun with a left foot injury. She will join Thomas on Team USA at the Olympics. The United States are favorites to win gold and missing Collier would be a big blow to the team.
