There was only 1 game today, unfortunately, but it was a fun one. The Phoenix Mercury escaped the Dallas Wings 104-96, one of the highest-scoring games of the season. They were led by Team USA member Kahleah Kopper who finished with 34 points, her 6th 30-point game of the season. Copper is a nightmare matchup for the Wings who give up the most points, most points in the paint, and opponent fast breaks. These all feed right into Copper’s playing style, one of the most athletic players in the league. Copper was able to get into the lane whenever she wanted going an efficient 14/20 from the field. The Mercury needed this star performance from her as they couldn’t contain Natasha Howard. She dueled with Kahleah Copper all night, ending the game with 36 points and 11 rebounds, a season-high.
Kahleah Copper and Natasha Howard were historic tonight. They are the first 2 players since 2019 to have at least 30 points and shoot 70% from the field or better in the same game. There are always a lot of points scored when these two teams meet. The Mercury took the last game 97-90 over the Wings. Copper now has the most 30-point games on the season with 6. She has been one of the leagues, scoring 22.4 points per game, good for the 3rd highest average in the WNBA.
This was a much-needed win for Kahleah Copper and the Mercury who had dropped their last 2 games before this one. That includes a loss to the Indiana Fever where they blew a 15-point lead. The Mercury are now back to .500, sitting at 10-10 on the season. They will look to add another win under their belt when they take on the LA Sparks on June 7th.
