Player of the Day 07/02/24: Kelsey Plum

Kelsey Plum makes her first appearance as the WNBA Player of the Day. The Aces easily handled Caitlin Clark’s Fever, winning 88-69, in large part due to Plum’s big night. She had a season-high 34 points to go along with 5 assists and 6/11 shooting from behind the 3-point line. Plum and A’ja Wilson combined for a staggering 62 points. KP looked energized right away, scoring 9 points in the first quarter. After a 2-point performance against the Washington Mystics, she had a bounce-back game as most greats tend to do. The Fever are tied for 4th most 3-pointers made given up per game and it’s no surprise that she took full advantage. You can see her offensive clinic below.

The Fever were no match for the defending champions and Plum. In the highlights, you’ll see her getting multiple uncontested 3-pointers. This is partially due to the playmaking of Chelsea Gray and partially to do with how poor the Fever defense is, which is bottom three in the entire WNBA. Gray stepping back into her role gives KP the ability to get more catch and shoot 3’s instead of having to play in isolation so much. When you leave someone like Plum with that much space she is going to punish you.

Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson made history with their efficiency. They are the 5th teammates in WNBA history to shoot at least 55% from the field with over 20 field goal attempts. There isn’t a team in the league that stands a chance against the Aces when they play like that. Over the last 5 games, the Aces have clicked on all cylinders. At one point of the season the Aces were completely out of sorts. The return of Chelsea Gray has steadied the ship and it’s going to be fun to watch them play the rest of the year. They will be back in action against the Washington Mystics on the 4th of July.
